We live in a society where one often jumps to judge another, making assumptions about a bypasser based on the facade they put on. I often find myself guilty of this. This is a restrictive way to live. It is easy to do. It’s easy to judge someone, dismiss them, not try to understand their perspective. It’s hard to think of the other side’s point of view and why they act the way they do. This is the road less travelled.

Recently, I came across an interview where the interviewee said that one’s brain can be thought of as a computer which acts based on its programming. The programming being one’s life experiences. I’d like to take this a step further. I like to think of each person as a Large Language Model (LLM). An LLM is a ‘deep learning model based on vast amounts of training data’ (Amazon). An LLM is made up of two components. Its parameters (training data) and its code. I’d also like to introduce the concept of closed source vs. open sourced LLMs. Put simply, a closed source LLM’s parameters and code aren’t available to the public and are only available to the people working on it. Inversely, an open source LLM’s parameters and code are available to the public. I think of each person as an LLM. Those who I truly understand and know well are open source LLMs to me. If I don’t understand the perspective and background of a person, they are closed source to me. I believe it’s unfair to judge a person on their output if their training data is unknown to me. Just as an LLM doesn’t control its parameters, they don’t control what they’ve experienced,.

To understand a person is to love them. We should all strive to understand. Especially prior to judgment. To strive for a life full of understanding is a big step in the journey to a life full of love, a noble pursuit. Take the road less travelled.
